EJ'S TRAINING CAMP
PUSHING LIMITS: THE BRUTAL 12-MINUTE POWER TEST

EJ Trains is back with another brutal power test, this time tackling a full-out 12-minute effort to add a crucial data point to his power curve. If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that Coach Ryan Thomas has been mapping EJ’s critical power, and this test plays a key role in determining his fitness over time. Unlike the traditional FTP test, this method involves multiple max efforts across different durations to paint a comprehensive picture of his power profile.Heading into this effort, EJ was aiming for 425-430 watts based on recent training sessions. The test took place on Los Alamos, a grueling 3.48-mile climb with 1,193 feet of elevation gain, averaging a 7% grade—perfect for sustaining power without running out of road. With a previous 12-minute best of 431 watts, the goal was clear, but after pushing deep in a 3-minute test just days prior, fatigue loomed large. As the effort unfolded, heart rate soared, power wavered, and the mental battle became as intense as the physical one. Despite a strong start, the final numbers fell short at 400 watts, leaving EJ disappointed but determined to revisit this test post-team camp. With more gear, bike updates, and training content on the way, stay tuned for the next chapter in the journey!
